The cool kids were partying Tuesday night at the Toronto home of Roots co-founder Michael Budman and his wife, architect Diane Bald. (That's the Forest Hill estate famous for its backyard rink, where legend has it, even Wayne Gretzky has played shinny.)

The bash was a welcome-home event for Suzanne Boyd, a former editor of Flare who has been working in New York City but has returned to Toronto to edit a new magazine aimed at aging baby boomers. The new publication, to be called Zoomer, is owned by Moses Znaimer as part of his nascent media empire aimed at the 50-plus demographic. Seen among the 30 guests were former Toronto Maple Leaf Tie Domi, flying solo, Judy and Larry Tanenbaum (of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment), surgeon Bernie Goldman, Mr. Znaimer, natch, and Mr. Budman's Roots partner, Don Green, and his wife, Denyse. Celebrity Toronto hairdresser Jie swept in from the snowy night for an appearance with his entourage. And the roast beef repast was cooked by Joey Bersani and Michael Carlevale (who recently was eased out of his long-time restaurant, Prego della Piazza). The two chefs, way back in the day before there were zoomers, were celebrated restaurant partners.

Musical entertainment for the evening was provided by about-to-be-very-big Karen David, a Canadian living in England who has two movies coming out and a CD. Proof of just how cool she is (and how cool Mr. Budman is for having her at the party) is her appearance on the cover of the current issue of the fashion and lifestyle quarterly Anokhi, aimed at the South Asian market in North America.

There were two cakes for dessert - one for Ms. Boyd, the other a birthday cake for Mr. Budman, who was celebrating one more year that very day. So what's the age of the eternal Roots boy? "No idea," said one of his friends. "But it's part of the Zoomer generation."
